  35. * Installation

  37.    Netscape Navigator 3.0 is being distributed as both a 16-bit
  38.    Windows program and a 32-bit Windows program.  Both the 16-bit
  39.    and 32-bit versions of Netscape are shipped in a Premium
  40.    package that includes Plug-ins, and a Standard package that
  41.    does not include Plug-ins.
  42.  
  43.    If you are running Windows 3.x or Windows for Workgroups,
  44.    you MUST use the 16-bit Navigator even if you have Win32s
  45.    installed. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT,
  46.    use the 32-bit Navigator.  To run the 32bit Navigator,
  47.    you MUST have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack.
  48.  
  49.    Both Windows 95 and Windows NT provide built-in 32bit TCP/IP
  50.    stacks that you can setup.  You can also get (32 bit) TCP/IP
  51.    software from third party vendors like Trumpet Software,
  52.    and Ftp Software.

  54.    To obtain a copy of Netscape Navigator, download one of the
  55.    self-extracting executable files into a temporary directory.

  69. * Win95 users, if you are using any versions prior to this
  70.   release, you will get multiple uninstall entries in your
  71.   Add/Remove program.  If you prefer not having multiple
  72.   entries, you should do an uninstall to remove your previous
  73.   version of Netscape before you install the new release.

  75. * The Netscape Audio Plug-in will only work if you have a sound
  76.   card installed and configured properly.  It will not work
  77.   with the PC speaker driver. Please check your sound card manual
  78.   to configure the sound card.

  81.   uninstall the version you have and reboot your machine before
  82.   installing the latest version.  You might experience some

  143. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  144.  
  145. You must have a direct Internet connection before you can use
  146. Netscape. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not
  147. necessarily mean you can run Netscape. There are three
  148. requirements for Netscape Navigator:
  149.  
  150.     1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup
  151.        SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider.
  152.  
  153.     2. TCP/IP stack
  154.  
  155.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  156.  
  157. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service
  158. provider in your area.  You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP
  159. account from an Internet provider (for a dialup account).
  160.  
  161. When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a
  162. TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.
  163.  
  164. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when
  165. running Netscape Navigator, this means your computer is looking
  166. for the WINSOCK.DLL file which is part of the winsock package.

  172. The Netscape installer will overwrite existing OLE2 DLLs with the
  173. latest versions for US Windows. This will not affect 32-bit
  174. Windows. For 16-bit Windows, the only difference between the US
  175. and the Japanese versions are the internationalization of error
  176. strings. Occasionally, the Japanese user may see an English
  177. language OLE2 error message after installing Netscape. Currently,
  178. there are no Japanese versions available for the OLE2 DLLs.
  179. Netscape is working with Microsoft to make the Japanese version of
  180. the OLE2 DLLs available.

  183.               Information about the Quicktime Plug-in

  187. This part describes what you will need and how to use the
  188. Windows version of Apple's QuickTime plug-ins for Netscape
  189. Navigator 3.0.
  190.  
  191. WHAT THE QUICKTIME PLUG-IN DOES:
  192.  
  193. Apple's QuickTime plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.0 or
  194. later lets you experience QuickTime content directly in the
  195. Navigator browser window. You no longer need a "helper
  196. application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content with
  197. Navigator 3.0. You can also view QuickTime VR Panoramas and
  198. Objects inline, after downloading the QuickTime VR component
  199. from Apple. As a web developer, you can control the
  200. QuickTime playback experience through HTML commands. You can
  201. choose to have a movie automatically played for a user, or
  202. present a controller giving users the ability to play, stop,
  203. fastforward, and rewind.
  204.  
  205. The QuickTime plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies,
  206. and with movies prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's
  207. "fast start" feature. The "fast start" feature will present
  208. the first frame of the movie almost immediately and can
  209. begin playing even before the movie has been completely
  210. downloaded. The "fast start" feature saves you time waiting
  211. for the entire movie to download, but otherwise plays just
  212. like regular QuickTime movie.
  213.  
  214. Netscape Navigator will use the QuickTime plug-in
  215. automatically to play any QuickTime movie while browsing the
  216. internet.  The plug-in can play many kinds of QuickTime
  217. movies (.mov files) including movies with text, MIDI, and
  218. other kinds of data. If you have downloaded and installed
  219. the QuickTime VR component, it will also let you interact
  220. with QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects.

  224. * A PC running Windows 95, NT, or 3.1.

  226. * Latest version(s) of QuickTime :

  232. The PC files are in ZIP format and you will need a utility
  233. such as pkunzip to extract the software.

  236. You can obtain the QuickTime plug-in by downloading Netscape
  237. Navigator 3.0 (http://home.netscape.com). Please make sure
  238. you have downloaded the plug-in that is most appropriate for
  239. the computer you are using.

  241. * QuickTime VR
  242. If you would like to view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality)
  243. Panoramas and Objects using the QuickTime plug-in, you will
  244. need the QTVR library for Windows (QTVRW.QTC). The QTVR 
  245. software is *not* included with Netscape Navigator 3.0, 
  246. but you can download them from either the Apple QuickTime VR
  247. site (http://qtvr.quicktime.apple.com) or the QuickTime
  248. Software page (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  250. On Windows, the QTVRW.QTC file must be in the WINDOWS
  251. directory of your primary drive.

  264. Netscape Navigator 3.0 includes the QuickTime plug-in. When
  265. you run Navigator 3.0, the plug-in will be ready to use.

  267. If you are downloading the QuickTime plug-in or the
  268. QuickTime VR components for the plug-in from Apple's web
  269. site, you must quit Netscape Navigator and move the software
  270. to the appropriate location (see above).  When you relaunch
  271. Navigator, the plug-in will be loaded and ready to use.

  287. FREQUENT QUESTIONS:

  289. Q: Should Windows users download the 16-bit or 32-bit
  290. version of the QuickTime plug-in, or both?
  291. A: First of all, if you are using Netscape Navigator 3.0,
  292. you do not need to download the plug-in, it is bundled with
  293. Navigator 3.0.  But beyond that,  definitely *not* both.
  294. Download the version of the plug-in that matches the version
  295. of Navigator you are running. If you are not sure which
  296. version you are running, look inside the PLUGINS folder in
  297. your NETSCAPE folder. If you see Npnull16.dll, you are using
  298. 16-bit Navigator. If you see Npnull32.dll, you are using
  299. 32-bit Navigator.
  300.  
  301. Q: I am running Windows '95 (or NT). I downloaded the
  302. QuickTime VR software (QTVRW.QTC), installed it in my
  303. WINDOWS directory, and rebooted. But When I run Navigator
  304. with the QuickTime VR component, I can't view QuickTime VR
  305. Panoramas and Objects.
  306. A: Currently there is only a 16-bit version of the QuickTime
  307. VR software for Windows. The 16-bit version will not work
  308. with a 32-bit (Windows '95/NT) version of Netscape
  309. Navigator. If you would like to use the QuickTime VR
  310. software with Navigator, you will have to download and use
  311. the Windows 3.1 version of Netscape Navigator. When a 32-bit
  312. version of the QuickTime VR component is available for
  313. Windows '95/NT users, we will post it on the QuickTime web
  314. site (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  316. Q: I downloaded Netscape Navigator 3.0, but the QuickTime
  317. plug-in doesn't seem to be working.
  318. A: Navigator 3.0 lets you pick plug-ins for different types
  319. of content, just like you pick helper apps. You may need to
  320. pick the QuickTime plug-in in the Navigator
  321. "Options/Helpers" dialog to make the QuickTime plug-in work.

  323. Q: I am using a Web browser other than Netscape Navigator
  324. 3.0 and I am experiencing problems with the QuickTime
  325. plug-in.
  326. A: Currently, the QuickTime plug-in only supports Netscape
  327. Navigator 3.0 or later.

  329. Q. I design web pages and would like to know more about
  330. movie controls and other capabilities of the QuickTime
  331. plug-in. Where should I look for documentation?
  332. A: The QuickTime plug-in provides a number of new and
  333. exciting options for internet content providers. Please

  337. Q: I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and
  338. expect that I can use the option and control (shift and
  339. control on Windows) to zoom in/zoom out of the movie.
  340. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I expect the arrow
  341. keys to step through the movie a frame at a time. But the
  342. movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes.
  343. A: You need to select the QuickTime VR panaroma or QuickTime
  344. movie first by clicking on it. On Windows, the arrow keys do
  345. not work.
  346.  
  347. Q. I'd like to save some of the movies to my hard drive. How
  348. do I do this?
  349. A. You can click on the movie and press Command-S on the
  350. Macintosh or Control-S on the PC to bring up a "save"
  351. dialogue. However, this will not work for QuickTime VR
  352. movies. To save QuickTime VR movies go to the Navigator 3.0
  353. menu, select Options/General Preferences/Helpers, then
  354. select QuickTime from the list and choose Edit. At this
  355. point, you'll be presented with a few options, all will work
  356. for saving QuickTime VR files.
